The Offense scoring runs + Justin Verlander on the hill = Verlander win #21

Detroit scored 3 runs in the first inning and 5 in the 5th.  That was more than enough for Justin Verlander.  Verlander took a shutout into the 8th.  He ended up giving up 1 run on a solo homer in 7.1 innings pitched.  Joaquin Benoit came in to get him out of a bases loaded 1 out jam fueled by back to back infield hits.   Verlander's line:  1 run on 7 hits with 6 strikeouts in 7.1 innings pitched.  He's now 21-5 on the season.

It was a big 8-1 win over the White Sox as Detroit works to surrender no ground to its two pursuers, Cleveland and Chicago, in the Central.

Austin Jackson continued his recent hot hitting.  He was 3-5 with his 9th home run of the season and 2 RBIs.  In his last 3 games he's 9-14 with 2 homers, 4 RBIs, and 7 runs scored.

Jhonny Peralta delivered a bases loaded double that cleared them in the 5th inning.  Delmon Young had an RBI triple in the first.  Miguel Cabrera singled him home.  He then stole second base and scored on an Alex Avila single.

Brandon Inge was 2-4 on the game as he took over 3rd place on Detroit's all-time games played at third base.

In another milestone the win was Jim Leyland's 500th as a Tiger.  He becomes the 5th Tiger manager to reach 500 wins with the club.
