Tigers lose another tough one

Once again the bullpen had a letdown. Al Alburquerque came in to pitch the bottom of the 9th in a 3-3 game, after Justin Verlander had gone 8 solid innings. Verlander got touched for a pair of solo homers, but was otherwise strong.

Walk. Single. Intentional Walk. Bases loaded none out. Alburquerque eked out an out when Andy Dirks, playing shallow in left, was able to fire home on a bloop to the outfield in time to get a rare outfield force at home.

But Carl Crawford lined a single over Austin Jackson's head to win it. Detroit had the bases loaded and 1 out in the top of the 9th, but Jonathon Papalbon struck out Brennan Boesch and Miguel Cabrera to escape the inning.

In the top of the 8th, Boesch and Cabrera hit back to back homers to time the game. They were Boesch's 3rd and Cabrera's 8th.

Andy Dirks singled in Miguel Cabrera for his first big league RBI for Detroit's other run.

Alburquerque is 0-1 on the season. Detroit heads to Pittsburgh for their first interleague series. They'll be playing 2 straight road series, so they'll have to go without a DH for a pretty long duration. That means either Victor Martinez or Alex Avila will have to sit.
