Detroit has lost 2 of three in their first meeting with the Angels this year. On Monday they lost 5-1. Charlie Furbush took the loss in his first big league start. He gave up 3 runs on 5 hits in 4.2 innings pitched. It looks like Detroit was trying to keep his pitch count down. Furbush is now 1-2 on the season. Phil Coke made his first appearance out of the bullpen since being moved back there. He gave up a run on 2 hits in an inning of work.
Jhonny Peralta was 2-4 with a double an an RBI.
Last night, Justin Verlander got outdueled by Dan Haren. He lost 1-0, to fall to 11-4 on the season. Verlander didn't lose a start in June, and was named the AL Pitcher of the Month, but got no support. He gave up a run on 7 hits with 8 strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work. But Dan Haren held Detroit to 2 hits. Austin Jackson had a triple but was stranded there.
Today, Detroit staged a comeback to take a game in the series. Miguel Cabrera hit a 2-run homer, his 18th of the season, to fuel a 3-run 7th inning. Victor Martinez had a 2-run single, and Andy Dirks had an RBI single.
Brad Penny allowed 4 runs on 6 hits in 6.1 innings of work. He really settled down though after giving up 3 of the runs in the first inning. Penny evened his record at 6-6 on the year, finally getting an elusive win after the late run support came just before he exited instead of just after for a change.
