Tigers beat the Twins in the opener of a 4 game series

Justin Verlander returned to his dominant form.  He allowed 1 run on 5 hits in 8 innings pitched.  He struck out 9 and walked none.  With the win, he upped his season record to 13-5.  Detroit cruised 6-2.

Jhonny Peralta was 3-4 with his 15th home run of the season, an RBI double, and 3 RBIs.  Brennan Boesch hit a 2 run homer, his 14th of the season. Carlos Guillen also drove in a run.

Wilson Betemit made his Tiger debut, batting 9th and playing third base.  He was 1-4 and scored on the Boesch home run.

Earlier today is was announced that Brandon Inge was designated for assignment.  He has said that he intends to report to Toledo rather than asking to be released as a player with his amount of service could do if he clears waivers.  Since any team that claimed him on waivers would have to pick up the rest of his salary for the season, about $3 million for a guy hitting .177 with knees that are bothering him, it's unlikely that will happen.  If it did, Detroit has the option to work out a trade or pull him back off waivers and keep him.

Inge is a class guy and said he totally understands why this move has happened.  He loves Detroit and wants to go down to Triple A to find his hitting touch, and hopefully work his way back to Detroit when the rosters expand on September 1st or next season.
