On the last game of their season-opening road trip Detroit had the lead on Baltimore 3 different times and lost it. They finally gave up 5 runs in the 7th inning to lose 9-5.
Alex Avila hit his 2nd homer of the season. Brennan Boesch was 2-4 with an RBI double. Austin Jackson was 2-5 with an RBI double. Miguel Cabrera and Victor Martinez also drove in runs.
But Brad Penny was bit by the long-ball bug as has been frequent for Tigers' pitchers so far. He went 5.1 innings but surrendered 2 2-run homers.
Brad Thomas took the loss in relief, allowing 2 runs without retiring a batter. Enrique Gonzalez, called up because Ryan Perry had to go on the 15-day DL with an eye infection, gave up 3 runs in 2/3 of an inning.
Detroit heads home for its home opening against Kansas City tomorrow.
