Tigers get thumped by the Yankees again

Brad Penny's Tiger debut was a rough one. He did settle down though and the results weren't quite as overwhelmingly poor as his line indicates. Penny gave up 8 runs on 7 hits in 4.1 innings pitched. He walked 4 and struck out 3. Penny gave up a 2-out 3-run homer to Mark Teixeira. It was Teixeira's second 3 run homer in 2 games. Brad Thomas also gave up a 2-out 3-run homer to Russell Martin. 2 of those runs were credited to Penny. So 2 better pitches would have had him off the hook with 2 ER allowed.

Brayan Villarreal made his major league debut in relief for Detroit. The first batter he faced was Alex Rodriguez. Rodriguez crushed a 3-1 fastball to dead center for the 614th homer of his career. Welcome to the big leagues kid.

Detroit had a couple rallies in them, but those 2-out 3-run blasts kept digging holes. Austin Jackson hit his 1st homer of the season, and the first for the Tigers on the season.

Victor Martinez was 2-4 with a 2-run homer. It was his first Tiger home run and RBIs.

Alex Avila and Will Rhymes also knocked in runs. Detroit missed opportunities for big hits though. Magglio Ordonez struck out with 2 on to end an inning. Alex Avila also did the same.

Brandon Inge was 2-3 in the game. Brennan Boesch made his season debut in left, after Ryan Raburn started on opening day. There will be lots of eyes on how Boesch performs. He was 1-4.

Joaquin Benoit made his Tigers debut and Jose Valverde got his first work of the season. They combined for 1.2 hitless innings. There have been some other problems in the bullpen in 2 games but those 2 guys did what they're supposed to in the late innings. They just need to be doing it with Detroit in the lead.

The final was 10-6.
